Give Your Sprinklers Some TLC!

Protect Sprinklers!
Make sure that nothing is blocking your sprinklers. There should be no pictures or large furniture near the walls where the sprinklers are. Also, don’t hang lamps or plants near the equipment. Also, remember never to use the sprinkler pipes as hooks. Even lightweight items can damage the system. Keep the paint away from the sprinkler or cover if you intend to paint the room. Cover the sprinklers with plastic to paint in the room.
Keep the Valve On!
It’s pretty obvious that they should be on, but do check. Be sure that the control is open. An opened system will be in line with the pipe, while a closed one forms a right angle to the pipe. Professionals recommend using a padlock to keep the valve turned on. If the system is off, turn it back on as soon as possible. Also, never store anything within a foot of the water controls as this can hinder usage.
Test the Water Flow!
At least once a year, test the water flow rate. If your system is connected to a central alarm, let the fire department know that you will be conducting a test. Find the flow valve. It is usually tagged main drain or inspector test. Slowly turn on the valve so that it is in line with the pipe. When the water starts running, let it run for approximately a minute. If your system has an alarm, it will sound.
